I started thinking about the theme for the Project very early.  I love taking photos of children and capturing their ever changing moods, expressions and ways.  I decided on a children's party theme and luckily enough had the opportunity to take some great photographs for one very gorgeous little girl's birthday. However this quickly changed when I heard the circus was in town!  Eroni's Circus had arrived and I wanted to take my 3.5 year old as she has never been to the circus.  This is a small circus but was very popular.  I realised this would be a great theme for my project and decided to take the camera and family along one Sunday.

There were many complexities to this theme I soon came to realise. The first issue was composition.  There were fences in the way, poles in my foreground , the only win was the light which was nice and soft provided by the clouds thanks to lovely Melbourne weather.   Once inside my fears increased.  It was very dark.  I had spoken with Raimond recently about low light photography so I thought ok, perhaps lets use those tips to practice and see if we can get some great shots for the project.  I also needed to be aware of other technical aspects such as  fast movement.  I would need to watch my shutter speeds and ISO very closely here.  Aperture is key to determining depth of field however other factors such as ISO and shutter speed contribute greatly.  I was also concentrating on ccomposition and being aware my options for capturing those perfect moments passing by very quickly if I wasn't ready.  So away I went snapping as many shots as I could, adjusting settings determined by the situations as the presented themselves.

The good....

Some of the not so good....

I have captured really great images, and also some images where shutter speeds were to fast or slow and ISO was too high or too low.  The images reflect I am grasping the idea of low light photography well though.  Some of these images are displayed below.  There are also examples displayed where technical aspects need refining.   My eye for composition swayed at times where I became too focused on capturing the shot and missed the poles in the foreground or some obscure unwanted prop in the background.  The circus theme lost it's impact when the time came to creatively pull them together into my theme.   An event type theme could have been an idea worth pursuing, however I decided to go with a theme the represented photography I'm passionate about which is those "Caught in the Moment" acts which are so special.

Its worth mentioning, I didn't take a tripod with me so all shots were taken hand held.

There were a number of images that didn't make it into the project "Caught in the Moment".  This was due to issues which relate to incorrect shutter speeds and ISO, as well as the wrong aperture used in the early stages of the unit.  The affect of hard and soft light hadn't been taken into consideration either.  When you are taking shots in the moment, you don't get a lot of time to think all the technical aspects through.  With time I have no doubt I will improve on this.

The image of the penguin is great. The exposure is good and the composition was well considered, given the penguin was behind glass! He didn't make the project purely because I wanted my project to be focused on people.

All Images were edited in Photoshop to correct composition, levels and convert to black and white.
